The link between obesity and type 2 diabetes

This week is National Diabetes Week with a focus on early diagnosis and treatment. Your risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases if you are overweight or obese, so the two are very much interconnected. It is critical that you assess your risk and take action!

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are both chronic diseases which are a major challenge to our healthcare system. Diabetes alone costs the country around 14.6 million per annum.

Last week in the Sydney Morning Herald we partnered with the Sydney Institute for Obesity Surgery (SIOS) and published an article highlighting Australia’s obesity crisis. We discussed what options there are if you have excess weight and how to  adopt healthier lifestyle habits so you are not at risk of developing a number of chronic health issues, such as type 2 diabetes. See article below.

Evidence shows that type 2 diabetes can be prevented in up to 58% of high risk cases. The key is early detection and understanding your risk which can be easily done by answering a few questions online and then getting the right treatment if you are considered high risk. Take the assessment HERE – it will take no more than a couple of minutes.

If you have any concerns please call our clinic on (02) 9252 2225 and book in to see one our GPs for further assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
