What is a nutritionist?
Professional training in nutrition requires a comprehensive program of tertiary study. A qualified nutritionist should be registered with a professional association and hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher within the fields of nutrition, health science and human physiology. A nutritionist provides advice and guidance on what to eat in order to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle as well as provide foods, recipes and meal plans to address nutritional imbalances. They also prescribe nutrient supplements, vitamin therapy and other biochemic interventions to treat illnesses which have their cause in the digestive system.
What is a dietitian?
In Australia, Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) are university qualified professionals that are trained to assess nutritional needs, develop dietary meal plans, and assist people to manage health conditions by modifying dietary factors. APDs are members of the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) and provide nutrition information that falls in line with standards set out by the DAA.
Why is nutrition so important?
Optimal nutrition levels are essential in order for the body to function properly and maintain a good health status. The nutrients we assimilate and absorb from food allows the cells in our bodies to perform their daily duties, such as growth, repair, and cellular rejuvenation. A balanced, nutrient-dense diet, packed with vitamins and minerals from natural foods helps to nourish the body, reduce and protect against disease. Diseases related to poor diet include:
- Type II diabetes;
- cardiovascular disease;
- metabolic syndrome;
- heart disease;
- obesity; and
- certain cancers.
At Elevate, we take a holistic perspective in developing nutritional and dietary programs. We recognise the biochemical uniqueness of every person and nutritional protocols are designed based on individual needs.
Our Registered Dietitian and Nutritionists work on a person-centred approach to nutritional wellness. Importance is placed on integrating natural, vitamin and mineral rich foods into the diet. Some major areas that our nutrition professionals specialise in include:
- weight maintenance & holistic weight loss;
- sports nutrition;
- hormone balance and digestive support;
- chronic disease prevention; and
- specific dietary requirements based on a medical diagnosis, such as inflammatory bowel disorders.
A detailed case history is recorded at the initial appointment. A medical history, lifestyle habits, and a food diary is required to form an overall picture of your current health. A strong focus is placed on health outcomes so every person can feel confident and supported in reaching their health goals.
Did you know that you can have your genetic profile tested to determine your individual nutritional requirements?
Have you ever wondered why nutritional studies can produce such different and controversial results? While everyone benefits from a healthy diet, fine tuning the intake of specific nutrients can help you to reach your goals in a more efficient and timely way. What you eat, or what you don’t eat, can affect your genetic make-up. Epigenetics is the exciting and emerging field of science which illustrates how lifestyle factors, including diet, can affect our genes. Our nutrition experts are certified in FitGenes genetic testing. While we can’t control our genes themselves, we can influence their expression. In other words, particular environmental and nutritional factors have the ability to switch our genes on or off. If you know more about your genetic risk factors, you may be more inclined to make more informed nutritional choices.
The nutrition experts at Elevate are available for group talks, presentations, seminars, or individual consultations.
