Establish healthy lifestyle habits that support sustainable blood sugar management strategies

Why should I manage my diabetes?

Taking control of your diabetes today has numerous benefits including:

  • Feel better: better sugar management keeps you feeling vibrant
  • More energy: optimal sugar levels give you energy to keep going
  • Reduces your risk of erectile dysfunction
  • Reduces your risk of heart problems and stroke
  • Reduces the stress on your body’s blood vessels
  • Reduces your risk of nerve damage
  • Has added benefit if you also have high blood pressure or other conditions

What causes diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes may be caused by hereditary, autoimmune, or unknown factors.  Type 2 diabetes is more common and is associated with a sedentary lifestyle and obesity, particularly belly fat.  Both types can benefit from healthy eating and physical activity, but should initially be guided by a trained health professional.

Take charge of your diabetes today.  Call for an appointment with one of our Integrative GPs and establish healthy lifestyle habits to support sustainable blood sugar management strategies.

Some of the areas we’ll discuss and review with you:

Risk factors:  Discuss your risk factor profile and address areas of concern.  Diabetes often comes hand in hand with other health issues, so it is important to address all areas from a holistic perspective.

Blood glucose measurements: Measurement of your capillary blood glucose and/or fasting blood glucose.

Insulin measurement: Measurement of your fasting insulin levels. High insulin can be an indicator of metabolic problems.

Insulin Resistance Index:  Your fasting glucose and insulin levels can be used together to provide an indicator of how sensitive your body’s tissues are to the effects of insulin

Blood pressure measurements: Measurement of your blood pressure at rest in multiple positions and during and after exercise to evaluate your individual response.

Arterial stiffness:  Measurement of arterial stiffness. This can predict cardiovascular risk beyond just standard blood pressure measurements.

Exercise:  Discuss and review your exercise regime

Electrocardiogram:  High blood sugar from diabetes can damage your blood vessels, which may contribute to high blood pressure. High blood pressure can stress the heart in ways that may cause abnormal rhythms.

Counseling:  One-on-one discussion about your results and lifestyle counseling to address areas of concern.

Peace of mind:  Denial of your diabetes can lead to poor blood sugar management and bigger problems down the track.  Having an action plan in place will give you the peace of mind you need.
