Osteopathy Awareness Week and Promotion!

In light of Osteopathy Awareness Week, we delve into what osteopathy is and how traditional therapies can treat a range of problems.

Our osteopath, Dr Phil Austin, is very experienced and highly qualified. He has worked with various elite sports and dance institutions. Dr Austin explains that osteopathy involves soft tissue work, stretching and manipulation of the bones and muscles to promote mobility and restore the body’s balance.

Osteopaths treat disorders such as back and neck pain, headache, joint pain, arthritis, repetitive strain injuries (RSI), sciatica, sports injuries and tendonitis. It is a traditional approach, where the core principles are based on the relationships between the body’s structure and the way it functions both locally and as a whole. Osteopathy complements other health care systems and is valuable in the treatment and management of a wide range of musculo-skeletal conditions.

In Australia, lower back pain is the most common form of pain and it is also a leading cause of disability worldwide, inhibiting aspects of life, such as staying in the workforce.

The American College of Physicians (ACP) recommend lower back pain should be treated with non-drug therapies, such as osteopathy. The ACP’s recommendations include, “selecting therapies that have the fewest harms and costs, since there were no clear comparative advantages for most treatments compared to one another.”

Dr Austin holds a PhD in Pain Medicine and a Masters in Pain Management so is a highly experienced practitioner to consult with on chronic pain in the body.
